The other night I got together with a few friends after a long drive. We decided to have a movie night. Or at least attempted to have a movie night. But something interesting happened and I wanted to share.
During the movie, we had one person constantly on the phone. Checking social media, texting, taking pictures. Things of that nature. Each time he put his phone down, I knew it was only a matter of time before he picked it back up. He just couldn’t help it. He was that addicted.
Then we had another person who kept getting up to make various snacks. She wasn’t really watching the movie at all she just kept going into the kitchen to find food. But again, she just couldn’t help herself. At least that’s what I was observing.
While all of this is going on, there are three of us on the couch watching the movie. All without a phone in our hands. Which is how you are supposed to watch a movie, in my opinion. We obviously have more control over our use of technology than they do.
I just found the whole situation so interesting and also so crazy at the same time. It’s crazy how much control technology seems to have over some people. They can’t do anything without it. And unbeknownst to them, they are ruining the experience to those around them.
The whole thing annoyed me so much (it shouldn’t have, but it did) that eventually I got up and went to bed. I went to bed and I laid there writing this blog post about it. So if you are someone who is so addicted to your phone that you can’t even sit down with your friends and enjoy a movie, I challenge you to rethink your disciplinary skills.
I mean think about how the people you are interacting with. Or the people you are attempting to interact with. How do they feel? Probably not very welcome while you are shoving your face in your phone the entire time.
Come on. We can do better. We can do hard things. We can set our phones down.
